Challenges from my experience:

Many established companies focus heavily on optimizing processes and results - a sensible practice, but one that often leaves little room for risky, innovative initiatives. This cautious approach can unintentionally marginalize true innovation.

A lack of clear strategy, especially for innovation, further exacerbates the problem. Without specifically allocated funding, resources and a culture that welcomes risk, efforts can result in mere "innovation theater" - activities that appear innovative but have no substantive impact.

For transformative, disruptive outcomes, the ability to think long-term is critical. Understanding current and emerging trends through foresight frameworks enables organizations to identify and seize future opportunities and ensure they are not just adapting to change, but leading it.

My approach:

I usually start by creating the right environment for performance, which in this case means getting all the necessary tools like AnyIdea and developing a process and communication plan with all relevant stakeholders. Even the best tools will not lead to success without management and team buy-in and a proper communication plan.

It is also crucial to define clear rules of the game and allocate separate budgets, teams and resources. It is very frustrating to have to get approval for every little thing. Innovation activities need to be agile, fast and iterated until commercial success is achieved.

Often the cycle of insufficient innovation can be broken by bringing in an external person. This person can help with strategy and execution without being biased by the company's existing status quo.
